22/08/2018: In addition to fielding an adult ladies team for the first time in 2018, Kildysart GAA notched up another milestone in its history when its first ever ladies minor team took to the pitch in Kildysart last night. To the delight of the large crowd, the team marked the occasion with a big Championship win over Wolfetones, Kildysart 4-13, Wolfetones 1-2. Speaking after the match, manager Christy Clancy said he was impressed with the girls’ performance and was happy with the way the team played together and kept the pressure on throughout the match.

Kildysart started well and had the majority of possession which was reflected on the scoreboard. Roisin Donnellan had the Blues in front 1-1 to no score by the 13th minute. Points from Amy Murphy and Grace Sheerer, combined with another green flag for Roisin extended Kildysart’s lead to 2-3 to no score with 8 minutes remaining in the first half. The backs defended well and hindered the Wolfetones’ attack. However, persistence paid off with the Shannonsiders eventually breaking through the defence to put one in the back of the net. Moments later they were awarded a penalty, which would have brought them right back into the game, with potentially only a goal between them. However, cool composure by the captain and goalie Ruth Finucane denied Wolfetones the penalty as well as the several rebounding efforts that followed. The ball was eventually cleared and Wolfetones had to settle for a point to end the half Kildysart 2-3, Wolfetones 1-1.

Kildysart continued their team play throughout the second half with the contribution from backs Niamh Moloney, Sarah Casey, Caitlin Casey and Emma Byrne limiting Wolfetones to just three scores over the course of the hour, and only a single score in the second half. In addition to her defensive duties, centre back Sinead Kelly added two scores to the attack and as such was one of eight scorers on the night (out of 13 players). Kildysart continued to dominate the play with young forwards Emma Garry and Alaina Casey showing great promise in front of the net by bagging a goal each. Grace Sheerer added three more to her tally with Rachel O’Sullivan and Rachel Conway (2) rounding out the scoring for Kildysart. Substitute Aoife Cleary made an impact on her arrival by applying pressure on the kick outs to ensure the ball stayed in the Wolfetones half. Overall, it was a great team effort that fuelled their victory and things look promising for their 2018 campaign. Final score: Kildysart 4-13, Wolfetones 1-2, Referee: John McDonagh.
